The Indian Railways: Earlier, senior citizens traveling by train used to get a discount on the fare. But after the Corona period, the ban was lifted. However, after that, many times there has been a demand to restore this exemption given to senior citizens. In the winter session of the Lok Sabha, the issue of exemption in the fare of a particular citizen was once again raised. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has made it clear that, on average, a 53% subsidy is given to every passenger traveling by train.
Plea for exemption in the House
In the winter session of the House, Janata Dal-United MP Kaushlendra Kumar once again raised the issue. He said that during the Corona period, the exemption given to specific citizens for train travel was withdrawn. But so far, it has not been brought back. Kaushlendra Kumar urged the government to restore the concession given to senior citizens in fares.
Senior citizens get lower berths
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ramesh Bidhuri urged the government to ensure that lower berths are given to special citizens. So there will be no problem for them to travel.
Who is eligible for the rail travel concession?
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier said in the House that the railways have given a subsidy of Rs 59,837 crore on passenger tickets between 2019 and 20. On average, every person traveling by train gets a 53% subsidy.
Apart from this, Indian Railways is also giving concessions in fares to passengers in special categories. This relaxation is being given to 4 categories of disabled people, 8 categories of students, and 11 categories of patients. So far, 18 lakh people have taken advantage of this discount.
