Who was Ahiravan? In the Ramayana, there is a detailed mention of Ravana, the king of Lanka. In the Ramayana serial directed by Ramanand Sagar, who has not read the Ramayana, one gets to know about Ravana. This tells you that Ravana had two brothers, Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana.
But did you know that Ravana also had two half-brothers? It is mentioned in the Ramcharitmanas. The names of Ravana’s two half-brothers were Ahiravan and Mahiravan. Let us know about them today.
Ravana was the king of Lanka, similarly Ahiravana was the king of Patala Loka. Ahiravan was also unrighteous like Ravana, he could change his form at will. When Ravana’s side became weak in the battle with Ramji, Ravana called Ahiravan for his support.
Vibhishan heard the conversation of Ravana and Ahiravan and went and informed Hanuman about it. On hearing Vibhishana’s words, Hanuman began to closely monitor Rama and Lakshmana so that no one could reach Rama and Lakshmana.
Ahiravan conspired and at night, when the entire monkey army was sleeping, Ahiravan took the form of Vibhishan, after which Hanuman allowed Ahiravan to go inside the hut. Ram and Lakshman were sleeping in a hut when Ahiravan abducted them and took them to Patal Lok. Ahiravan wanted to sacrifice Rama and Lakshmana to his beloved goddess Mahamaya.
This is how Lord Hanuman brought back Rama and Lakshmana.
When Hanuman did not find Rama and Lakshmana in the hut, they went to Vibhishana and Vibhishana told them that Ahiravana had kidnapped them and taken them to Patala Loka. After which Hanuman ji took a pledge that he would save Lord Rama and Laxman from the clutches of Ahiravan, for which Hanuman ji reached Patal Lok. Where he met his son Makaradhvaja. After killing Ahiravana, Rama declared Makardhwaja as the king of Patala.
